A Pollioni does not arrive at the atelier as a collection of finished parts waiting to be put together.
It begins as material.
For the standard Machine, the body, feet, and gears begin as solid 6061 aluminum stock. Each component is machined individually in the atelier, one part at a time, until the geometry of the Machine begins to emerge from the billet.
6061 is our standard, not a limitation. The body material can be selected differently for an individual commission. The cradle is treated in the same way: its material is chosen for the client rather than prescribed universally.
Whatever the material, the responsibility for turning it into a Pollioni remains the same.
From solid stock
Machining is only the beginning.
When a component comes off the mill, it carries evidence of how it was made. Tooling marks remain on the surface. An edge may need additional attention. A burr too small to affect the operation of the Machine may still be large enough to catch the eye or the hand.
Those details are addressed in the atelier before the part goes any further.
Each component is inspected individually. Edges are refined by hand. Surfaces are worked and polished to remove tooling marks and correct the small imperfections left behind by machining.
It is slow work.
There is no single operation that turns a machined component into a finished one. The process is cumulative: machine it, hold it, look at it, feel the edge, work the surface, inspect it again.
Only when the part is ready does it move on to bead blasting.
The blasting prepares the surface for the finish that will eventually unify the separate components of the Machine. The parts are then sent to our finishing partner for DLC coating before returning to the atelier.
The finish
We chose DLC because the surface of the Machine has to survive being lived with.
Raw aluminum is easily scratched and dinged. That may be acceptable for a hidden mechanical component. It is not acceptable for an object designed to remain in view, handled repeatedly, and lived alongside a watch collection.
But durability alone is not enough.
When the coated parts return, they have to look right together.
The body, gears, feet, and rear components have all been manufactured as individual pieces. By the time they are assembled, the eye should no longer read them that way.
The finish must be matte.
The surface must be smooth.
There can be no scratches, dings, burrs, or unexplained changes in texture from one component to the next.
The rear of the Machine is particularly unforgiving. Several independently manufactured and finished components sit beside one another closely enough that a subtle difference in surface immediately becomes visible. One part cannot appear darker, rougher, glossier, or differently textured than the piece beside it.
If it does, the Machine is not ready to be assembled.
Every batch that returns from coating is inspected in the atelier. Parts are unpacked and examined individually. Surfaces are checked. Edges are revisited. Components are compared against one another.
The fact that a part has passed through a finishing process does not make it finished.
We decide when it is finished.

That distinction matters to us because Pollioni is not assembled from a catalogue of completed components sourced from different manufacturers and brought together at the end.
The body is machined here.
The gears are machined here.
The feet are machined here.
The surfaces are prepared here.
The parts are inspected here.
And when those parts return from specialist coating, they come back here to be inspected again, matched, fitted, and assembled into the final Machine.
The finishing partner performs a specialized process. The standard remains ours.
The same attitude continues inside the Machine.
There are components the client will never see after assembly. They still receive the same attention. Internal pieces are machined and finished with the same concern for clean edges, consistent surfaces, and proper fit.
It would be easier not to.
The client will never disassemble the Machine and inspect an internal component for a tooling mark.
That does not change the way we make it.
The reason is less romantic than it may sound. When you manufacture something yourself, every part becomes part of the same problem. A poorly finished internal component does not suddenly become acceptable because a cover will eventually hide it.
It was still made here.
So it still has to be right.
Material, by commission
That approach also means that no two commissions have to begin with exactly the same material specification.
6061 aluminum and DLC form the standard Pollioni language, but they are a starting point. A client may choose a different body material. The cradle may introduce another material entirely.
Those choices do not turn the Machine into a collection of decorative options.
They become new manufacturing decisions.
Different material means different stock, different behavior under a tool, different finishing requirements, and another set of surfaces that ultimately have to belong to the same object.
That is the work of the atelier.
By the time a finished Pollioni leaves, much of that work has disappeared.
The tool paths are gone.
The burrs are gone.
The individual pieces no longer call attention to themselves.
The client sees a Machine and feels a surface that is solid, smooth, and resolved.
What they do not immediately see are the hours spent getting it there.
They are still in the object.
